Dear friend,

Here is what happened to me on June 14, 2004.

What Identity Theft Did To Me

I was on my way to work in the morning and realized I needed to make a quick pit stop at the gas station. I filled up the tank and grabbed a cup of coffee and newspaper once inside the store.

Handing over my credit card to the cashier, I was stunned when she told me that it has been rejected. Embarrassed, I handed over another card and, to my horror, it was also declined.

As the wave of embarrassment crashed over me, I fumbled around in my pockets for enough cash to cover the bill.

On the way out I stopped at the ATM to replace the money I had in my pockets and was shocked when the screen told me that my account has insufficient funds.

By this time I was really panicking.

When I arrived at the office I immediately checked my online credit card and bank statements.

My checking account had maxed out my overdraft protection and I just knew there must be some kind of mistake. Panic hit me hard when I remembered that the next mortgage payment should be coming in and now I'd be delinquent.

Looking at my credit card statements they were over there credit limits with tens of thousands of dollars worth of recent purchases that I hadn't made.

Could it get worse? Yes!

I called the bank to find out what's going on but they passed me around until I got to the branch manager who told me that I was overdrawn and the car loan I had recently applied for - an anniversary gift for my wife - had been denied despite my years of excellent credit.

She said that this was because I had supposedly applied for credit at a number of other places within the few months and they weren't comfortable in extending a loan to me based on my current debt load.

Panic and fear turned to anger as I came to realize I had become a victim of identity theft. As much as I wanted to gut the thief who stole my money and identity, there was nothing I could do about it.

It took me $17,343.59 (I added it up!), and countless hours over many years to recover. I never got back the cash from my accounts, I lost my home through foreclosure and nearly went bankrupt.

Once bitten twice shy.

Recovering from identity theft is one thing, but ensuring that it won't happen again is another. I did everything I could to make sure that nobody was ever going to get access to my personal information or have a slightest shot of stealing my identity.

You may scoff but the damage was real and I do not want you to do any favors for identity thieves out there and be another victim of identity theft.

You do NOT want this to happen to you!

Here is what you can do to protect your identity

Protect Your Personal Information

It's great to have a trusting nature and all but it is dangerous sometimes, to be too trusting. Be sure to do these things as part of your every day life:

  • Don't provide anyone with information that they have no need for regardless of what they claim their reason is for requiring it.
  • Always keep in mind what one can do with a few key pieces of information such as a social security or identity card number and a driver license number.
  • The steps you need to take to becoming a professional real estate agent.
  • Be careful of who around you might be listening to your conversation when you are speaking either on the telephone or to someone in person and are providing them with personal information.
  • Refrain from including your date of birth, drivers license number or other personal identity numbers on job applications or resumes.
  • Question any business or company who asks for your social security number.

Avoiding a Phishing Scam

You're probably like me and not very technologically advanced. Also, you're honest and generally trusting.

Now that is a good thing, imagine a world full of dishonest, untrusting people, but it also means that we are susceptible to phishing scams. However you can avoid falling into this trap by playing it smart. Are doing these things:

  • Use anti-virus software, anti-spyware software and a firewall to prevent phishing emails from tracking your internet activities
  • Find out the Hot Secrets that a select few real estate agents won't tell you!
  • Never EVER email personal or financial information - email is NOT a secure method of transmission
  • Immediately delete any emails that appear to be fraudulent WITHOUT opening them
  • Be very cautious about opening any attachments or downloading files from email regardless of who is sending them
  • Do not reply to or open any links that are provided in phishing emails
  • If you are concerned about a bank or other account that is referred to in an email, you are best to physically telephone the company whom the email is claiming to be from and ask them personally if there is a problem
  • Look for bad grammar and misspelled words in phishing emails
  • Legitimate businesses and financial institutions will not ask for personal information via email
  • Emails that do not address you by your full name but instead sometimes just by your email address are a tip off

When you must provide financial or other sensitive information online be sure that the site you are using is secure. Look for a lock icon on the status bar or a website address that begins with https: (the "s" stands for secure).

Just doing the above steps will give you some good basic protection and you should immediately do them.
